Many companies can say how many people visited their site last month and cannot say which channel brought their last ten customers. Without that, budget decisions are guesses. Conversion tracking closes the gap. The setup takes days, not months, and it has to be done before judging any campaign.
Decide what counts
A conversion is an action that matters to the business. Write the list before opening any tool.
- Main conversions: a sent enquiry form, a purchase, a booked appointment, a phone call, a signup.
- Smaller steps: a newsletter subscription, a downloaded guide, a view of the pricing page.
Keep the two apart. If a page view counts the same as a purchase, the reports reward the wrong things.
Set up the events
In Google Analytics 4, everything a visitor does is an event, and the events that matter to you are marked as key events. A few rules avoid the usual errors.
- Fire the event when the action succeeded, not when the button was clicked. A form with a validation error is not an enquiry.
- Count it once. A confirmation page that can be reloaded, or two tags doing the same job, inflate the figure.
- Exclude your own team's visits and test submissions.
- For shops, send the value and the products with each purchase.
A tag manager keeps the tracking code in one place, so marketing changes do not each need a developer.
Tag every campaign link
Analytics can only report a source if the link carries it. Add campaign parameters, known as UTM parameters, to every link you place in emails, social posts, adverts and partner sites: source, medium and campaign name. Agree a naming scheme and write it down. "Facebook", "facebook" and "fb" appear as three sources otherwise.
Do not tag links between pages of your own site. That overwrites the original source of the visit.
Connect the ad platforms
Each ad platform needs to learn which clicks led to a conversion, both for your reports and for its own bidding. Link Google Ads to analytics or install its conversion tag. Install the tracking for Meta, LinkedIn and others the same way. Check that the numbers in the ad platform and in analytics are in the same range. They never match exactly, because each counts differently, but a large gap means something is broken.
Consent and privacy
In many countries, tracking for analytics and advertising needs the visitor's consent. A consent banner has to work properly: no tracking before the choice, and the choice respected. This means some visits are not measured, and the reports show less than happened. Tools can estimate the missing part. Accept that the numbers are approximate, and compare trends more than absolute figures.
Phone calls and offline enquiries
For many service businesses, the best leads call. If calls are not tracked, the channels that produce them look worthless. Options range from tracking taps on the phone number to call tracking numbers that differ by source. At the least, ask every caller how they found you and write it down.
Follow the lead to the sale
A form submission is not a customer. One channel may bring many cheap enquiries that never buy, and another few that almost always do. Store the source of each lead in the CRM with the lead. Then report by source on what became of them: qualified, quoted, won, and for how much. That report, more than any dashboard, shows where the budget should go.
One report, read regularly
Build a single view with a handful of numbers per channel: spend, visits, enquiries, cost per enquiry, customers, revenue. Look at it every month on a fixed day. A report nobody reads is worth nothing, however detailed.
Check that it still works
Tracking breaks silently. A redesign removes a tag, a form is replaced, a consent tool is updated. Test the main conversions after every site change and once a month in any case. A sudden drop to zero or a sudden doubling is almost always a tracking fault, not a change in the market.
Summary
Define the conversions, record them once and correctly, tag campaign links, connect ad platforms, respect consent, capture calls and follow leads into the CRM. Analytics and tracking setup is part of our SEO and digital marketing service. If you cannot say which channel brings your customers, that is the first thing we would fix.
