When someone searches "dentist near me" or "accountant in Pune", the first thing they see is a map with three businesses. Most people choose from those three. For a shop, a clinic, a restaurant or any firm that serves a defined area, appearing there is worth more than a first place in the ordinary results below.
What decides the map results
Google describes three factors. Relevance: how well the business matches the search. Distance: how far it is from the searcher or the place named. Prominence: how well known and well reviewed it is, online and offline. You cannot move your building, so the work is on relevance and prominence.
Google Business Profile
The profile is the source of what appears in the map. Claim it, verify it and fill in everything.
- Name. The real business name, exactly as on your sign. Adding keywords to the name breaks the guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Primary category. The single most important field for relevance. Choose the most specific one that fits, then add secondary categories.
- Address or service area. Show the address if customers visit you. Hide it and set a service area if you travel to them.
- Hours. Including holidays. Wrong hours produce bad reviews.
- Services or products, description, attributes. Complete all that apply.
- Photos. Real ones: the entrance, the interior, the team, the work.
Keep it current. Post updates, answer the questions people leave, and check that nobody has suggested a wrong edit.
Consistent details everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, your profile and every directory that lists you. Differences, such as an old phone number or a former address, weaken trust in the data. List the business on the main general directories and the ones specific to your industry and city, and correct old entries.
Reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to call. Three habits are enough.
- Ask. At the moment the customer is satisfied, with a direct link to the review form. Most happy customers never think of it unless asked.
- Reply. To all of them. Thank people for good ones. Answer bad ones calmly, with facts and an offer to resolve the matter.
- Stay within the rules. Do not pay for reviews, offer discounts for them or ask only the customers you expect to be positive. It breaches the platform policies and reviews can be removed.
Your website
- A page for each location, with its address, hours, a map, directions, and content that is truly about that location. Copies of one page with the city name swapped do not rank.
- The same name, address and phone number as on the profile, in text and not only in an image.
- Local business structured data on each location page.
- Pages that load fast and work on a phone, since most local searches are mobile.
- Local content where it is real: areas served, local projects, local customers.
Local links and mentions
Links from other local sites add prominence: a chamber of commerce, suppliers and partners, local press, events you sponsor, associations you belong to. A handful of real local links matters more than many from unrelated directories.
Measure it
The profile reports how many people saw it, called, asked for directions and visited the website. Tag the website link in the profile so that analytics can separate those visits. Record enquiries by source. Positions in the map change with the searcher's location, so calls and direction requests are a better measure than a single rank.
