How AI Search Reads Your Website and What to Change

AI assistants answer questions by reading pages like yours. Being quoted correctly depends on a few plain properties of your content and code.

More people now ask a question and read an answer written by an AI system, with a few sources linked beneath it, instead of scanning a list of results. Whether your company appears in that answer, and whether it is described correctly, depends on how readable your site is to these systems. Most of what helps is not new. It is the careful version of what search engines have always rewarded.

How these systems use your site

There are two routes. Some systems learned from a large snapshot of the web during training, which you cannot influence after the fact. Others fetch pages at the moment a question is asked, select passages that seem relevant, and write an answer from them. The second route is the one you can affect, and it works on passages, not on whole sites.

So the practical question is: if a system pulled one paragraph from your page, would that paragraph be clear and correct by itself?

Put the content in the HTML

Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your main text is added to the page by a script after loading, they may receive an almost empty document. Check what your server actually sends by viewing the page source or fetching it with a command-line tool. Text that matters should be in that response.

Say plainly what you do

A system looking for "who provides this service in this city" needs a sentence that says so. Pages built only from slogans give it nothing to quote. State what the company does, for whom and where, in ordinary sentences near the top of the relevant page.

  • Use headings that describe the section, including question-style headings where they fit.
  • Answer the question in the first sentence under the heading, then add detail.
  • Keep each section about one topic so it can stand alone.
  • Give specifics: what is included, who it suits, what it does not cover.

Decide which crawlers may read the site

AI crawlers identify themselves with their own names, and your robots.txt file can allow or block each one. Some sites block them without anyone having decided to, because a security tool or hosting default did it. If you want to be cited in AI answers, check that the relevant crawlers are allowed. If you prefer not to be used, block them deliberately. Either choice is reasonable, as long as it is a choice.

Be consistent everywhere

These systems combine what your site says with what other sources say about you. If your company name, address, services or founding details differ between your site, business listings and professional profiles, the answer may mix them or leave you out. Make the basic facts identical everywhere they appear.

Add structured data

Markup for your organisation, services and articles states facts explicitly. It is not a guarantee of being quoted, and it reduces the chance of being misread.

About llms.txt

A proposed convention is to publish a file named llms.txt that summarises the site and lists its key pages in plain text. It is cheap to create and may help systems that look for it. It is not a standard that all providers have committed to reading, so treat it as a small extra and not as the main effort.

What is not worth doing

Repeating keywords, publishing large volumes of thin generated pages, or writing hidden text for machines does not help and can harm how the site is treated. Systems that select passages favour content that is specific and trustworthy. Material written only to fill space is the opposite.

Measuring it

Measurement is still limited. You can watch your analytics for visits referred by AI assistants, and you can periodically ask the main assistants the questions your customers ask and note whether you appear and how you are described. It is manual and imperfect. Be cautious of anyone promising precise tracking or a guaranteed position in AI answers.

Summary

Make sure your content is in the HTML, state facts in plain self-contained sections, choose your crawler access deliberately, keep details consistent and add structured data.
